CHRISTOFOROS SAVVA

Christoforos Savva (1924-1968) was born in Marathovouno Cyprus. After finishing primary school he followed in his family's farming trade. After a stint in the British army (Cyprus Regiment) he left for the UK where he initially took classes at St. Martin’s  School of Art and followed up his studies by enroling at the Heatherley school of Fine Art in London (1949 - 54). He further continued his studies in Paris, at the Academie Montparnasse of Andre Lhote (1956 - 59). He is known for his abstract figurative painting and is considered to be one of the most influential Cypriot artists. In 1960 Savva and Glyn Hughes formed the Apophasis gallery which was to be of significant importance to the Cypriot cultural world at the time.
