Yiannis Tsarouchis (1910-1989) was born in Piraeus. He studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts and had a strong interest in Byzantine Iconography, architecture and fashion. Together with Pikionis, Kontoglou and Hatzimichali he led the movement of introducing elements of Greek tradition in painting. During his travels in Paris and Istanbul in the 30's he came in contact with Renaissance art and Impressionism and met influential artists such as Matisse and Giacometti.
